The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Caraga Regional Director (RD) Priscilla R. Sonido shared key proposals to kick-start the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry in Caraga during the Caraga ICT Council meeting on December 13, 2022, at the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Building in Butuan City.

RD Sonido said that the Region needs to boost the ICT to support business process outsourcing (BPO) to create jobs, quality jobs, and green jobs as espoused in the current administration’s 8-point socioeconomic agenda. She mentioned that the Region lags behind in terms of gross regional domestic product and poverty reduction.

RD Sonido provided the following key points to reinvigorate the ICT Council and the ICT industry in the Region: 1) Secure accreditation from the Philippine Economic Zone Authority for Butuan City IT Park; 2) Consider the inclusion for the land resource of the ICT industry in the City’s Comprehensive Land Use Plan; and 3) Craft an ICT roadmap to identify gaps and harmonize initiatives on ICT. The ICT Council agreed to create a technical working group, headed by the Department of Science and Technology with NEDA, Department of Information and Communications Technology, Caraga State University, TESDA, Department of Trade and Industry, Butuan City local government unit, and the private sector.

The Caraga ICT Council is a private-led group established in 2007 and registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission in 2009 with Butuan City Councilor Cherry May Busa as Chairperson. The Council targets to harmonize initiatives for business start-ups on ICT to maximize the benefits of government assistance to various ICT players.
